New Orleans, LA, July 7th, 2009- On August 1st, 2009, a collective of New Orleans hip-hop artists and activists will come together at Tipitina’s Uptown to pay tribute to the former No Limit Records artist, Mckinley “Mac” Phipps. In 2000, Phipps was charged with first-degree murder surrounding a controversial shooting at nightclub in Slidell, and was later sentenced to 30 years in prison. To this day, Phipps, along with friends, family, and eye witnesses at the scene of the crime still maintain his innocence, and after nearly 9 years of incarceration, they continue to fight the wrongful conviction of a New Orleans living legend. The August 1st tribute concert aims to raise and renew a city-wide awareness about Phipps’ case, with the ultimate hope of seeing the ruling overturned. The concert also aims to raise money; 100% of the proceeds will be donated to help support Phipps’ family and legal defense fund. The concert will be produced in partnership with 2-Cent Entertainment, along with various music, arts, and social change organizations in New Orleans. All of the artists involved will be donating their time and musical talent in a show of solidarity and support for Phipps, in recognition of his legacy as one of the most beloved and influential New Orleans hip-hop artists. The tribute concert will begin at 10 pm on August 1st, with the house doors opening at 9pm, and tickets will be sold for $10. The artist line up includes a diverse and talented array of musicians, representing some of the most popular contemporary New Orleans hip-hop artists, brass bands and musicians, along with legendary New Orleans DJ’s. The artist line up includes Dee-1, Shamarr Allen, Truth Universal with One Eye, DJ Raj Smoove, DJ EF Cuttin, the New Era Brass Band, Psychoward MC’s and more, to be announced soon. The concert is expected to draw in a massive crowd of long-time “Mac” fans and supporters.
